Introduction: Narrow band endoscopy photography has been widely used for mucosa lesions. We used narrow band endoscopy (NBI) to follow up with the patients with oral cancer. It should be beneficial for early detection of tumor local recurrence and second primary cancer. These techniques may result in early intervention for recurrent or second primary decrease and improve the overall survival rate for oral cancer patients.
Methods: We recruited patients with oral cancer patients after complete treatment to join this study. The patients were requested for regular follow up at our clinic after treatment at least every 3-6 months within narrow band spectrum endoscopy (NBI) and took the pictures which were stored in the hospital computer and were build in the image database. We also selected the same location and stages oral cancer patient as control study case from data bases of oral cancers of our hospital from 2004-2014 without NBI examination as a control group. Then, the survival rate between experimental group and control group was analyzed. The p value is 0.1.
Results: We recruited 108 patients in our study cases who received approximate 34 months follow up in average. 61.1% of them were founded with abnormal NBI finding and received at least one biopsy for recheck. Of them, 24 were diagnosed with local recurrence or second primary in this study under the assistence of NBI scopy. Of the 24, 9 of them were rT1 and 4 were rT2 , however, there were 2 cases of rT3 and 9 cases of rT4. All 24 patients received rescue therapy. However, 7 cases expired. Our overall survival rate at average 36 months follow up is of about 93.8%, which is much better compared with the control group (81.7%).
Conclusions: We recommend regular and more intensive inspection oral mucosa in oral cancer patients, especially with assisted NBI endoscopic examination. NBI endoscopy may play an important role in early detection of recurrent or 2nd primary cancers. Early detection means early rescue for recurrent diseases which may result in improvement of overall survival rate.
