(1107) Enhancing Skills and Confidence in the Management of Chronic Rhinosinusitis With Nasal Polyposis

Introduction: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a significant healthcare challenge that requires specialists to collaborate to select appropriate therapy and develop individualized patient treatment plans. This study examines the impact of a personalized educational initiative to optimize patient outcomes by targeting individual knowledge and competence gaps in CRSwNP management.

Methods: A 30-minute online educational activity was launched in September 2022 for otolaryngologists, allergists/immunologists, pulmonologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in CRSwNP care. Using self-assessment and an adaptive learning approach, the activity aimed to improve learners’ ability to identify patients eligible for and who may benefit from targeted biologic therapies, address type 2 inflammatory comorbidities, and incorporate therapy into team-based management plans. Learners who responded to baseline questions correctly and with high confidence were able to bypass content and focus on areas of need.

Learner knowledge, skills, and confidence were measured pre and post activity through multiple choice assessments, and learners were grouped according to their responses at baseline and post activity: optimal knowledge/competence + high confidence (group 1), optimal knowledge/competence + low confidence (group 2), and suboptimal knowledge/competence + low confidence (group 3).

Results: A total of 1,588 otolaryngologists participated in the activity. For each of the learning objectives, changes in group sizes showed an increase in optimal knowledge/competence and confidence. Post activity, the size of group 1 increased from 17% to 39%, group 2 increased from 40% to 52%, and group 3 decreased from 36% to 10%.

Conclusions: This tailored approach led to gains in knowledge, competence, and confidence for otolaryngologists, as evidenced by the growth of groups 1 and 2 and reduction of group 3. Overall, knowledge/skills increased by 34pp. However, 62% of learners still indicate low confidence, evidencing a need for ongoing education and clinical experience to reinforce key concepts and skills.
