(0400) A Case of Medullary and Papillary Thyroid Cancer in a Patient Taking Ozempic

Introduction: Semaglutide has been marketed with the warning that people who currently have or have a family history of medullary thyroid cancer should refrain from taking this drug. No cases have been reported of a patient developing thyroid cancer since the drug's release; however, this report contains a patient who contracted medullary and papillary thyroid cancer within 1 year of starting the GLP-1 agonist.

Methods: This case report concerning medullary and papillary thyroid cancer in a single female patient was conducted using chart analysis and pathology from a The University of Oklahoma Health Science Center.

Results: While there is not clear evidence as to whether the patient had a pre-existing malignancy, her disease rapidly progressed after beginning semaglutide. Her calcitonin doubling time was less than 9 weeks, and there was evidence of early nodal metastasis. This case of medullary and papillary thyroid cancer after taking semaglutide confirms the risk of cancer within patient populations that have a family history of thyroid cancer.

Conclusions: This case report provides a clear demonstration of a patient who had a family history of thyroid cancer who began taking Semaglutide and immediately experienced a rapid progression of medullary and papillary thyroid cancer signifying that the warnings listed with this medication are highly warranted.
