PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: We are witnessing exciting developments in the diagnosis and management of pediatric sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). We have a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying genetic, and cytomegalovirus (CMV). There have been new approaches for CMV diagnosis, increasing prevalence of gene panel testing, broader indications for cochlear implantation and now gene therapy. We have assembled an expert panel to discuss evidence based approaches to the management and treatment of childhood SNHL. One of the panelists performed the first gene therapy in the United States for a child with a genetic hearing loss. One panelist introduced expanded targeted early CMV testing to Utah. The other panelists have expertise in the genetic causes of hearing loss and cochlear implantation. We propose to provide a recommended approach for the child with newly diagnosed SNHL, the current status of gene panel and CMV testing, the evolving indications for cochlear implantation and the role of gene therapy.
