PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Otolaryngology humanitarian efforts primarily focus on the delivery of quality Otolaryngology care to populations outside of the US. While these efforts serve a noble goal in addressing health care needs on a global platform, many needs of local underserved populations go unaddressed. There are striking similarities between these global and local communities both in late presentation of disease and challenges in care access. A criticism often leveled at global outreach efforts is that many populations in the US go without adequate healthcare provision. However, there are lessons to be learned from global outreach efforts in expanding access for underserved US populations.

This diverse panel of experts will highlight the social determinants of health unique to underserved populations. Furthermore, it will examine how Otolaryngologists can more effectively reach and care for their local underserved populations. The panel will discuss examples of their impactful service in rural (Dr. Bush) and urban/inner city settings (Dr. Moore), as well as the importance of providing access to specific groups including minorities, immigrants, and refugees (Dr. Farzal). Finally, Dr. Chan will present his innovative disparities research on pediatric hearing care and discuss programs developed to increase access for the most vulnerable.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand how social determinants of health uniquely represent barriers to care.
  2. Examine medical practices that have successfully addressed the needs of underserved populations locally.
  3. Implement specialty initiatives or establish partnerships with pre-existing local primary care practices focusing on these groups.
