Effective Management of Auricular Hematoma: Hands-On Experience With the Experts

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Auricular hematoma is a common cause for otolaryngologic consultation, both in the outpatient clinic and in the emergency department. While identification of an auricular hematoma is straight forward, improper drainage and dressing of the ear hematoma can result in significant complications and deformity. As such, every otolaryngologist and otolaryngology advanced practice provider needs to be able to diagnose and treat hematoma surgically, as well as anticipate, mitigate, and identify potential complications. This session will use a case-based format that includes a high-fidelity surgical simulation of effective auricular hematoma drainage. Participants will each be able to incise and drain an auricular hematoma, place bolster dressings and/or mattress sutures, and have feedback on their work from experts. Experts will demonstrate various approaches to hematoma management, and review strategies to manage and avoid complications such as infection and cauliflower ear. For those interested in surgical simulation, this session will utilize a 3D printed mold-created single-use simulation task trainer as well as actual surgical instruments and dressings, providing a realistic simulated procedural experience.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Perform effective incision and drainage of auricular hematoma.
  2. Demonstrate various surgical strategies to prevent re-accumulation of hematoma (bolster dressings, mattress sutures, etc.).
  3. Recognize complications of auricular hematoma and develop management plans thereof.
