PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Our surgical training has traditionally instructed us to armor up with education and career milestones, to strategize and plan, to precisely diagnose and treat. With enough gritty diligence, strategic planning, and rigorous training, we aim to avoid things like grief, failure, disappointment, and even shame. Ultimately our lives as surgeons, scientists, leaders, partners, and parents are inescapably vulnerable. A surgical case gone wrong. Giving and receiving negative feedback. A rejected key grant proposal. Apologizing to our family for another holiday spent at the hospital. This is the world we all live in.

Join Maie St. John, Peter Hwang, and Al Merati as we discuss the challenges and moments of grief we all face - seemingly irrevocable closed doors, guilt and shame, the isolating moments of feeling less than, and what can take us through these difficult moments to find ourselves on the other side again. Moderated by Brian Nuyen.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the role of vulnerability and authenticity in our personal and professional lives as otolaryngologists.
  2. Promote introspection into the ways authentic relationships with self and others are personal sources of resilience and meaning.
  3. Analyze the differences between guilt and shame, and the role of self-compassion within a growth mindset and a resilient organization.
