PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This panel will discuss challenges that arise in the use of oral steroids to treat professional voice issues; review pharmacologic principles that can help guide dosing regimens; examine emerging science about the mechanistic action of glucocorticoids; and provide guidelines for clinicians who treat vocal professionals.

When prescribing steroids to treat acute inflammation of the larynx or trachea, dosing and tapering regimens might vary widely, ranging from a daily maintenance dose of Prednisone to a Medrol dose-pak; some practitioners choose higher and more frequent doses. These decisions are often borne out of training rather than evidence. This inconsistency in practice patterns can be confusing to patients, and the absence of clinical guidelines can make decision-making about steroids to treat voice disorders challenging for practitioners.

The panel will review salient science from the otolaryngology, rheumatology and endocrinology literature, where mechanisms of action of oral glucocorticoids continues to be studied at the molecular and cellular levels, and discuss these findings in the context of clinical and practical considerations related to dosing and tapering regimens. The panel will thus provide an evidence-based approach to using oral steroids in the treatment of vocal professionals.
