Adding Laryngeal Reinnervation to Your Practice

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Laryngeal reinnervation with an ansa cervicalis to recurrent laryngeal nerve anastomosis is a practical option in the treatment of unilateral laryngeal paralysis. Many patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis are candidates for the procedure. The technique is straightforward and provides a predictable and substantial improvement in vocal quality to near normal levels. The session begins with a brief review of the physiology of laryngeal paralysis. The indications and contraindications for reinnervation will be presented. The surgical technique will be examined in detail with emphasis on nerve identification, preparation, and anastomosis. Treatment results from patients who underwent this procedure will be analyzed to give the participant a better idea of the treatment expectations and selection criteria of the panelists. Participants in this session will gain additional insight into how this technique can be incorporated into the treatment options they offer to their patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis.
