PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: A lack of diversity in clinical trials is a driver of inequity in health outcomes. Improving access to clinical trials is essential in developing evidence-based care practices and clinical guidelines that will promote health equity. This interactive panel and audience discussion will address the importance of improving diversity in clinical trial enrolment, and examine and address barriers to equity in study design, conduct, access, accrual and retention. The focus will be on evidence-based short- and long-term solutions to improve access for patients historically underrepresented in clinical research.

Learning Objectives:

Be able to describe the statistical basis for the importance of representation in clinical trials, and how underrepresentation impacts health outcomes.
Be able to trace the process of patient identification, access and enrollment in clinical research, while identifying targetable barriers to research engagement and evidence-based interventions to combat these barriers.
Be able to recognize the short- and long-term challenges to improving equity and diversity in clinical trial enrollment, and propose actionable and evidence-based interventions that are applicable to a range of research and clinical settings.
