PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Comprehensive otolaryngologists will be likely to encounter deadly disorders involving both the anterior and lateral skull base. This includes both inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic disease in addition to trauma. These conditions may present with insidious and indistinct symptomatology and may often be confused with more routine pathology. It is important that otolaryngologists maintain a high index of suspicion for these conditions to avoid significant morbidity and potential mortality and remain capable of initiating time-sensitive treatment. This panel will be composed of two lateral skull base surgeons and two anterior skull base surgeons. The first half of the panel will be a case based discussion of lateral skull base disorders including skull base osteomyelitis/malignant otitis, massive CPA tumors, and secondary manifestations of acute coalescent mastoiditis. The second half of the discussion will investigate cases of invasive fungal sinus disease, central skull base osteomyelitis, and secondary complications of bacterial sinusitis (Pott's puffy tumor, cavernous sinus thrombosis). The panel will emphasize early recognition, timely diagnostic workup, and key interventions for each case. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own cases for discussion with the panel as well. Attendees should gain increased understanding of how to identify and manage deadly skull base disorders in ambulatory, inpatient, and emergency care settings.

Initiate accurate and timely diagnostic workups for these conditions.
Identify key first steps to take in the pharmaceutical and surgical management of these conditions.
