Beyond the Battle: Life After Head and Neck Cancer and the Vital Role of Survivorship

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: In recent years, advancements in multi-modality treatments for Head and Neck Cancer (HNC), coupled with an increased incidence of HPV-associated tumors, have led to a growing population of HNC survivors. This panel aims to address the evolving landscape of survivorship care, emphasizing the importance of universal guidelines for HNC surveillance and exploring potential gaps in care that survivors may encounter.

Key Topics:
1. Timing for Clinical Follow-Up:
a. Exploration of optimal schedules for post-treatment clinical follow-up, considering treatment modalities and individual patient factors.
2. Laboratory and Imaging Modalities for Routine Surveillance:
a. Review and discussion of evidence-based practices regarding laboratory tests and imaging techniques for effective and timely surveillance.
3. Auditory Testing Post-Treatment:
a. Identification of patients who may benefit from auditory testing following treatment, emphasizing the role of audiologists in survivorship care.
4. Psychosocial Factors During and After Surveillance:
a. In-depth discussion on less commonly addressed psychosocial challenges faced by HNC survivors, including dysphagia, dysphonia, fatigue, pain management, lymphedema therapy, intimacy issues, disfigurement, depression, anxiety, physical exercise, and nutrition.
5. Importance of Multi-disciplinary Providers:
a. Examination of the critical roles played by multi-disciplinary providers in the comprehensive care of HNC patients, highlighting the importance of synergy between all the various healthcare professionals.
6. Community Otolaryngologists in HNC Care:
a. Demonstration of the pivotal role community otolaryngologists play in the continuum of care for HNC patients, emphasizing their contributions to early detection, referral, and ongoing support.

As the landscape of HNC survivorship care continues to evolve, this panel provides a platform for comprehensive exploration and collaboration among diverse healthcare professionals committed to enhancing the well-being of HNC survivors.

  1. Provide information describing evidence based approaches for surveillance in HNC patients.
  2. Discuss psychosocial aspects patients may encounter during surveillance period and after cure.
