PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: It' me. Hi. I'm the problem it's me...Taylor Swift's recognition is instructive for physicians. Her advice is to stop staring at the sun and look in the mirror. This panel discussion is to revisit the idea of the "difficult patient," and be more introspective about the physician contribution to physician-patient relationships. We will review prior narratives of "unhelpable patients ", to "hateful patients", and finally "difficult patients" with an appreciation of the fact that they physicians who coined these terms were all White males. We will then explore how we can employ more culturally competent and diverse strategies to improve our listening and our communication with patients.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the history of the moniker, "difficult patient," with attention to the mental health issues that are often implied by the use of this term.
  2. To review patient personality styles, but also review Brigg-Meyers data about Otolaryngologists and look at behavioral triggers that can undermine healthy relationships.
  3. Provide advice about the internal and relational work physicians can do to improve relationships with patients. We will also share recent data about patients received better care if their physicians/surgeons are women to look for best practices.
