Allergic Rhinitis: Overview

Overreaction of the immune system to pollen, dust mites, pet dander, mold, or any other allergen cause allergic rhinitis. Symptoms include sneezing, itching, stuffy nose, and watery eyes. Interestingly, its incidence is increasing in almost all countries for various reasons Antihistamines, decongestants, nasal corticosteroids, and immunotherapy are classical treatment modalities.

Several novel approaches to treating allergic rhinitis have recently existed. Targeted medicines known as biologics obstruct specific molecules involved in the allergic reaction, including interleukins and immunoglobulin E (IgE). For severe cases of allergic rhinitis, biologics such as omalizumab and dupilumab have proven effective treatments. Sublingual Immunotherapy gradually desensitizes the immune system by introducing tiny amounts of allergens under the tongue. It is proven to be highly effective in a group of patients. Its disadvantage is not knowing if that person will be in that effective group. On the other hand, researchers are working on folk remedies used for many years for allergic rhinitis symptoms in public without any scientific approval. Cell culture and animal studies with tannic acid, butterbur, and curcumin have shown positive clues for their being a medicine in the future. Far-infrared treatment and phototherapy are new and promising modalities. We planned to update the present modalities and discuss the future possibilities.

  3. Discus the preventive precautions to decrease allergic rhinitis prevalence.
