Stroboscopy 101: Tips, Tricks, and Pearls for Incorporating Videostroboscopy Into Your Practice

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Stroboscopy is the use of rhythmically flashing light to view rapid moving objects in simulated slow motion to make it perceptible to the human eye and plays an instrumental role in diagnosing laryngeal pathology. Stroboscopy was developed during the 19th century, and in 1895, Oertel demonstrated its use as tool to evaluate vocal fold vibration. However, it took until the later part of the 20th century, with the advent of television, video recording, and flexible laryngoscopy, for videostroboscopy to be developed, which allowed the routine evaluation of vocal fold pathology. Today, it is the most common tool of voice specialists, laryngologists and speech language pathologists, but it has utility for the comprehensive otolaryngologist as well. The purpose of this panel is to review this technology and its application in clinical care and to discuss how to introduce videostroboscopy into a comprehensive otolaryngology practice.

A diverse panel of experts will explore the full range of challenges and considerations for incorporating stroboscopy into an otolaryngology practice including: patient selection, equipment options, logistics of of site image review (eg cloud services and EMR connections), and practical techniques for maximizing patient comfort, exam quality, and efficiency.
