PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The significant advancement of minimally invasive surgery, specifically endoscopic- and robotic-assisted procedures, has revolutionized neck surgery. These innovative approaches have the potential to minimize the aesthetic and psychosocial consequences associated with neck procedures, such as neck dissection, benign tumor resection, and thyroidectomy. Over the past decade, the combination of oncologic surgery and aesthetic approaches with the technological advantages of robotic and endoscopic surgery has been successfully implemented in numerous centers worldwide. Despite the encouraging initial safety and oncological outcomes reported by these centers, many head and neck surgeons remain apprehensive about adopting minimal invasive techniques mainly due to concerns regarding exposure and visualization. This controversy surrounding the effectiveness of these procedures compared to conventional techniques has led to significant debate. In this program, our aim is to address the ethical and technical aspects of remote approaches in neck surgery. We will explore the results obtained by head and neck and endocrine surgeons who have implemented robotic thyroid surgery, neck dissection, and benign tumor resection. By shedding light on this controversy, we hope to highlight the potential risks and advantages of robotic surgery as a precision tool for neck procedures. This discussion will effectively provide clarity on the role of these techniques, encouraging their adoption among well-trained otolaryngologists and head and neck surgeons.
