PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This program will update the Hospital-Based Otolaryngologist practice paradigm, highlighting the diversity of roles offered to the Otolaryngology Hospitalist (OH) and the advantages of this paradigm to physicians and the hospital system. As ENT departments take on more complex patients and heavier workloads, the value of an OH is greater than the sum of consult billing and inpatient surgical volume. OH are dedicated inpatient faculty supervisors, quality improvement and patient safety advocates, resident teachers and mentors, department ambassadors, second surgeons available for urgent and emergent cases, among other roles. As Hospital-Based Otolaryngology is entering its second decade, new physicians have been creating their roles and unique models of care within their departments and hospitals. These new OH bring a variety of considerations for creating and negotiating the role based on their paths (started after residency, with or without fellowship training, returned to academia, etc.), and how this model best fulfills the needs of their hospital, their department, and their own career development.
We will discuss the draws of the role from the physician perspective, the advantages of the role for the department, and the value of the Hospital-Based Otolaryngology service line to the hospital.

Learning Objectives:

Understand the range of roles an otolaryngology hospitalist/surgeonist fills in different practice settings.
Update with recent examples of the implementation of an otolaryngology hospitalist/surgeonist in a hospital or academic system.
Negotiate the system-based practice hurdles of the otolaryngology hospitalist/surgeonist.
