Pediatric Laryngoscopes and Bronchoscopes

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The breadth of pediatric airway endoscopy equipment available to providers is extensive and understanding basic equipment needs can be a daunting task.

In this hands-on, interactive course, the distinguishing features, applications and indications of the most commonly used pediatric airway instruments will be discussed including laryngoscopes, bronchoscopes and foreign body removal devices.

History of the evolution of laryngoscope development will be briefly reviewed as will pitfalls and pearls of endoscopy that improve the safety and efficiency of the procedure. Pediatric bronchoscopes are available in a plethora of sizes, some varying in diameter by only a fraction of a millimeter. Critical sizes of bronchoscopes needed at an institution will be discussed. The value of the Cincinnati mobile “Airway Card” application in operative planning will be reviewed.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn distinguishing features and handle each piece of equipment including the Lindholm, Benjamin, Parsons, Holinger-Tucker, Weerda, Kleinsasser, CMAC, Dedo, and Jako laryngoscopes. Bronchoscopes and their components will be reviewed. Common optical foreign body removal instruments will be trialed and pre and intraoperative considerations for safe retrieval discussed.

This presentation is given annually as part of our national airway endoscopy course and is consistently perceived as an enjoyable, informative, interactive session.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To review the wide variety of pediatric laryngoscopes that are commonly used today and to understand their distinguishing features and their applications.
  2. To understand the large variety of sizes of pediatric bronchoscopes available and understand which sizes and accessories are critical for use.
  3. To review foreign body removal equipment and recognize its use for removal of common and uncommon foreign bodies.
