PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Cultural competency has become a generally accepted component to delivering high quality medical care. Otolaryngology has been identified as a specialty that is among the least representative of the diversity in the US population. It will take many years to recruit the diverse workforce needed that reflects the US population. An immediate measure that can be taken to improve cultural competency is to offer education on minority populations in the US. This panel will review the history of Hispanic/Latinx Otolaryngologists and give an update on where we stand as a specialty today with our workforce that has completed training and is in training. Through an examination of the history and our present state, audience members will gain perspective on what we have accomplished and the work ahead of us towards a representative workforce. The panel will discuss the diverse population that is grouped as Hispanic/Latinx and offer the audience advice on how to interact with Hispanic/Latinx patients to get the best outcomes for their health.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Audience members will gain knowledge on the US Otolaryngology workforce with respect to its diversity and reflection of the US population.
  2. Audience members will gain knowledge about the history of Hispanic/Latinx Otolaryngology leaders.
  3. Audience members will gain knowledge about the aspects of Hispanic/Latinx culture that can impact care of these patients and develop tools to take home to be a better doctor for these patients.
