Understanding Artificially Enhanced Attractiveness: A Quantitative Analysis of Artificial Intelligence-Manipulated Selfies

Introduction: The aim of this study is to quantitatively evaluate how artificial intelligence (AI) software manipulates selfies to improve perceived attractiveness.

Methods: Participants were instructed to upload 9 selfies in standardized head positions to the Remini AI Photo Enhancer smartphone application. Participants then submitted their self-determined most attractive AI generated image. The AI-enhanced image was then compared to the participants’ original frontal view selfie photograph using objective quantitative measurements. Specifically, changes in eyebrow height, midface height, lower face height, alar width, lip commissure width were recorded. A paired two-tailed t-test was used to evaluate pre and post-facial measurements.

Results: Analysis of AI generated images revealed decreased measurements for alar width (pre: 34 mm, post: 32 mm), nose height (pre: 42 mm, post: 41 mm), midface height (pre: 53 mm, post: 52 mm), lower face height (pre: 68 mm, post: 67 mm). Conversely, facial width was noted to increase (pre: 137 mm, post 140 mm).

Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the Remini AI-driven photo enhancing application manipulates various facial measurements to improve attractiveness of generated photographs. As the impact of AI increases, surgeons should understand how patients utilize these applications to perhaps define their aesthetic objectives.
