PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Foreign bodies of the upper aerodigestive tract are commonly seen by both pediatric and general otolaryngologists and can be a significant source of morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population. This course will review the history of the development of methods for airway and esophageal foreign body removal, which is intimately associated with the development of the fields of bronchoesophagology and otolaryngology. The course will discuss a systematic approach to the diagnosis and management of aerodigestive tract foreign bodies in children, including common presentations, physical exam findings, and radiologic evaluation. The instructors will present current techniques for upper aerodigestive tract endoscopy, which are appropriate for the diagnosis and removal of foreign bodies. Several case examples of challenging airway and esophageal foreign bodies will be reviewed. Many tips for managing difficult foreign body cases will be offered. Finally, the important role of the otolaryngologist in the prevention of foreign body ingestion and aspiration will be emphasized.
