PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Cochlear implants (CIs) have proven to be a useful treatment option for individuals with severe-to-profound hearing loss. Currently, indications, as well as advances in surgical techniques, have expanded the ability to offer cochlear implants as a treatment option to patients (CI in single-sided deafness (SSD) and endoscope-assisted CI). This program aims to empower participants to learn recent CI surgical techniques and as well understand the benefits of CI for the treatment of SSD. The knowledge of the new concepts in CI may assist clinicians in making better-individualized treatment decisions for severe-to-profound hearing loss patients.

Here are the three main topics that will be discussed.
- Cochlear Implant-Induced Cortical Changes in Single-Sided Deafness with Tinnitus
- Endoscopic-assisted cochlear implantation for hearing preservation
- Measuring Changes in Neural Activation Associated with Cochlear Implantation in Single-Sided Deafness.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the pathophysiology of tinnitus in SSD patients.
  2. Understand the clinical effectiveness of CI and CI-induced cortical changes in SSD patients with tinnitus.
  3. Understand the new surgical technique of CI: endoscope-assisted CI for better hearing preservation.
