PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Surgical margin status is the most important prognostic factor in patients with oral cavity cancer. However, significant heterogeneity exists amongst the head and neck cancer community with regard to surgical margin viewpoints and practices. More recently, discussions regarding appropriate margin distance, frozen section technique, management of an intraoperative positive margin, and role of adjuvant therapy have been the focus of governing bodies.

Learning Objectives:

Compare the techniques for Specimen vs Defect surgical margins, as well as emphasizing the importance of radial margins.
Illustrate strategies and limitations for management of intra-operative positive margins.
Highlight current standard practice recommendations for use of adjuvant therapy to manage positive margins.
