PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: We in Otolaryngology-HNS continue to find ourselves with an attractive and competitive specialty. For many reasons that will be outlined, a significant fraction of our applying medical students and current trainees express concerns that there is significant bias towards academic careers in their training programs. Furthermore, many of these students have expressed that they have to conceal their true wishes and desires for their own careers when applying to or even while training in Otolaryngology - HNS. These forces may have an impact on specialty unity and workforce distribution.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Session participants will learn many of the ongoing issues related to trainees and workforce concerns.
  2. Session participants will learn about the forces that drive choices to for trainees to do more and more research as part of their entering the Otolaryngology match, and the impact of these forces on specialty unity.
  3. Session Participants will hear about concerns about the consequences of limited exposure all careers in Otolaryngology .
  4. Session participants will be able to discuss a variety of approaches to remedy this situation - within Otolaryngology societies, communities, and government payors.
