Medical Student
Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine Florida Atlantic University
My name is Joshua Sohmer, and I’m currently a third-year medical student at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Florida Atlantic University. My journey to medicine has been anything but conventional, yet each step has solidified my passion for healthcare, particularly in the field of otolaryngology, where my interest in hearing loss drives much of my academic and clinical focus.
I was born and raised in San Diego, where I completed my undergraduate degree at San Diego State University. Before embarking on my medical education, I had the privilege of working in the cutting-edge field of stem cell research. My career in research led me to incredible opportunities at various startups and prestigious institutions such as the Salk Institute, UC San Diego (UCSD), and Sanford Burnham Prebys. These experiences not only honed my research skills but also deepened my understanding of the biological sciences, laying a strong foundation for my medical studies.
My transition from research to medicine was fueled by a desire to make a more direct impact on patients’ lives. Otolaryngology, with its blend of complex anatomy and the potential to dramatically improve patients’ quality of life, quickly captured my interest.
As I continue my medical journey, I’m committed to combining my research background with clinical practice to contribute meaningfully to the field of otolaryngology.
