Richard W Waguespack, MD, is a part time Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) and at the Birmingham VA Medical Center. He transitioned in early 2013 from over 30 years in private practice to his current positions, retiring full time from UAB in June 2020. He served as the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) CPT Advisor from 1999 through 2004, continues since 2009 in this capacity for the Triological Society, and was awarded the Burgess Gordon Award in 2012 and again in 2021 by AMA CPT. From 2004-2008, Dr. Waguespack was a member of the AMA CPT Editorial Panel and rotated off the CPT Assistant Editorial Board in May 2021. He chaired the AAO-HNS CPT and Relative Value Committee (1999-2009), was its coordinator for Socioeconomic Affairs (2008-2012), and is a past-president of the Academy (2013-2014). He was a member of the Medical Review Committee for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama (1998-2004). Dr. Waguespack has given numerous courses and presentations on coding, health policy, and practice management at AAO-HNS annual meetings and in other venues, including past annual AMA CPT/RBRVS update symposia.
Dr. Waguespack was on the Academy's Physician Payment Policy Work Group (3P) since its inception, until rotating off in 2020. He currently serves on the Academy's mentoring program for medical students who are interested in pursuing a career in otolaryngology.
