Robin Lindsay, MD is a Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School. My primary research and clinical focus is the evaluation, treatment, and quantitative outcomes evaluation of the surgical management of patients with nasal obstruction and/or nasal disfigurement. Prospective evaluation of disease-specific quality of life outcomes in functional rhinoplasty is an example of this effort and served as the basis of my thesis for induction into the Triological Society. To support my clinical and research goals, I developed a REDcap database for prospective evaluation and data collection of patients with nasal obstruction that combines global and disease specific patient reported outcome surveys, objective measures of nasal obstruction, and a standardized anatomic nasal exam. From this database and other sources, I have developed multiple additional projects to further research this topic. One project involves developing a nasal grading system with intra-rater reliability and to correlate nasal anatomy scores with nasal specific quality of life. In a more recent effort, we have described the use of a nasal flow meter to quantify inspiratory nasal flow, before and after nasal surgery. The ultimate goal of these efforts is to create systems to evaluate models for best surgical practice with integrated evaluation of cost utility and ultimately develop an integrated treatment algorithm for surgical practice in nasal obstruction.
Prior to beginning work at MEEI, I was an Active Duty United States Naval Officer, holding the positions of Assistant Department Head and the Associate Program Director. I am currently an Oral Board Examiner for the American Board of Otolaryngology and a member of multiple committees for the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, including the Clinical Advisory Committee and Evidence Based Medicine Committee, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Committee.
