Marisa Buchakjian, MD, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology, surgeon scientist in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. She has subspecialty training in Head and Neck Oncology, and her clinical practice is focused on treating cancers of the oral cavity, oropharynx, and larynx. Surgically, she has an interest in head and neck reconstruction and free tissue transfer procedures. From a research standpoint, Dr. Buchakjian is studying cancer metabolism in her laboratory, and also has a number of clinical and translational research collaborations. She is interested in understanding how oral cavity cancer cells utilize different nutrients and how this might be targeted to benefit patient outcomes.
