Dr. Gyorgy B Halmos MD, PhD is an otolaryngologist, head and neck surgeon, and associate professor at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the University Medical Center Groningen, University of Groningen in The Netherlands. He was born in Hungary and studied at The Semmelweis University in Budapest. After gaining his MD, he entered a residency program and took a board exam in otolaryngology in 2001. In the meantime, he started a PhD program at the Institute of Experimental Medicine, Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest and obtained a PhD title in 2002, and afterwards held a part-time postdoc position at the same institute until 2006. He became an attending physician at the Department of Otolaryngology at the Semmelweis University in 2002, where he worked until 2006. In 2004, he fulfilled a 3-month study trip at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, TX and in 2005, another 3-month study trip at the Philipps University in Marburg, Germany with the aim to get more familiar with head and neck surgery. In 2006, he got board certification in The Netherlands and started a 2-year head and neck fellowship in 2007 at the Department of Otolaryngology, University Medical Center Groningen in The Netherlands. After finishing this fellowship, he became a staff member at the same institution and is still presently working there. Beside clinical work, he is active with clinical research and he is a program leader at the PhD School Mechanisms of Health, Ageing and Disease (MoHAD) Institute. His clinical research interest is mainly focusing on specific aspects of geriatric oncology and the care pathway of the head and neck oncology care. Beside head and neck oncology, his clinical interest also extends to pediatric and adult airway stenosis.
