Dr. Sara E. Monaco is currently the System Director of Cytopathology at Geisinger Medical Center, where she is also Professor of Pathology at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine and Program Director of the Cytopathology Fellowship. She completed medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, where she stayed as a resident in anatomic and clinical pathology (AP/CP). She then completed her training, including cytopathology fellowship, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), where she stayed for over 12 years as a faculty member. At UPMC, she was the Cytopathology Fellowship Program Director, and the director of the Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsy Service. Dr. Monaco’s interests include non-gynecological cytopathology and informatics, in addition to education and anatomic pathology laboratory management. Her career has included the publication of many peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and four co-authored books in cytopathology. She has also presented several educational courses at national and international meetings, including the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC). She has also served on the ASC Executive Board and been a member or chair of numerous ASC committees, in addition to serving on important taskforces. Her career has focused on delivering high-quality patient care services through the power of small biopsies and cytopathology specimens, while also being an educational leader and active member of national and international societies.
