Dr David E. Eibling is Professor of Otolaryngology-HNS at the University of Pittsburgh and has served on the faculty of the department for over 34 years. He has searved as a staff otolaryngologist within the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System throughout this period, and as VA section chief until 2012. Prior to joining the Pittsburgh faculty he served 20 years on active duty in the USAF, including 12 years in active surgical practice and 3 years as chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center. Since 2009 he has directed or co-directed the VA Pittsburgh site of the Advanced (Interprofessional) Fellowship in Patient Safety. His clinical and academic interests over the past 45 years have been head and neck cancer, dysphagia, and voice; although more recently his clinical activities are non-operative medical otolaryngology in the VA. For the past 15 years his academic and teaching has been focused on reducting the impact of medical error on patients and providers, systems science, Human Factors, High Reliability, team training, and physician wellness. Dr. Eibling is a past-president of the Society of Military Otolarlyngologists, the American Society of Geriatric Otolaryngology, and prior Vice President of the Eastern Section of the Triological Society. He is currently the chair of the Healthcare Resilience Team at the Pittsburgh VA. He has authored or co-authored more than 30 book chapters and remains clinically active despite discontinuing active surgery at age 70.
