Intan Oldakowska, BEng, PhD, University of Western Australia
Intan is a biomedical engineer and entrepreneur whose mission is to develop medical devices to improve patient’s lives. Her PhD research to develop a novel expandable orthopaedic screw to improve fixation strength in poor quality bone at Curtin University has resulted in 5 patent applications and an investment backed spin-out company REX Ortho where she is the Chief Scientific Officer. She is also the co-founder of Cervical ChinUp, a company that has developed and commercialised a novel neck orthosis for patients with neck pain. She recently co-founded a third start-up company EarFlo, developing a non-invasive device to improve the treatment of chronic ear infections in young children. In 2018, Intan was a visiting scholar at Stanford University and returned to Perth to deliver the Perth Biodesign, where she educates medical technology innovators in the Biodesign methodology across a number of different programs. In 2021, she co-led the integration of the Biodesign methodology into the UWA Biomedical Engineering master’s program and now lectures in the School of Engineering.
