(0232) Nordic Questionnaire Use in Work-Related Musculoskeletal Injury Surveys Among Surgeons

Introduction: Previous studies have demonstrated that the prevalence of musculoskeletal (MSK) pain among surgeons is higher than the general population. The Nordic MSK questionnaire (NQ) is a validated tool utilized to qualify this pain. However, its modification across studies hinders its comparative power. A more comprehensive survey is needed to better identify factors contributing to MSK injury, ultimately improving awareness and education among surgeons.

Methods: In this systematic review, we identified studies from 2000-2023 that assessed MSK sequelae in surgeons using a modified NQ. Excluding randomized clinical trials and systematic reviews, three authors independently screened titles, abstracts, and full articles against the eligibility criteria. Metadata was extracted from qualifying studies using descriptive statistics and organized into the following themes: modified NQ, demographics, lifestyle, and work environment.

Results: Of 1822 screened studies, 15 met inclusion criteria (2014-2023). All studies used a modified NQ and assessed neck pain. The other body regions in NQ were evaluated to varying degrees: shoulder (86%), elbow (80%), wrist/hand (80%), upper and lower back (80%), knee (73%), foot/ankle (66%), hips/thighs (60%). 66% evaluated pain frequency, and 73% reported pain relief interventions. Additional elements not included in the NQ but commonly (>50%) included in this cohort were exercise habits, the effect of MSK pain on day-to-day activities, length of practice, medical specialty, and number of working/operating hours per participant. The most common (>70%) metadata across studies were gender, age, level of training, and number of working years. Only 60% of studies reported height, weight, and BMI.

Conclusions: Building a standardized survey that utilizes NQ’s foundation for qualifying pain and integrates the above evidence-based elements related to pain causative factors could better assist researchers in addressing the MSK injury risk among surgeons.
