(0229) Improved Efficiency of Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy in the Endoscopy Suite Compared to Outpatient Surgery Center

Introduction: Drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) assesses and identifies airway obstruction patterns in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients. DISE is usually performed in either the traditional operating room (OR) or outpatient surgery center (SC). There is a paucity of data regarding efficacy of DISE in the endoscopy suite (ES). Our objective is to compare efficiency and safety of DISE performed in the ES compared to the outpatient SC.

Methods: A single institution tertiary care center retrospective chart review of patients undergoing DISE in either the ES or outpatient SC was conducted. Consecutive patients undergoing DISE for CPAP-intolerant OSA from September 2023 to December 2023 were included.

Results: In total, 54 patients (24 ES, 30 SC) were evaluated with 68% [n = 37] being male. Age [p = 0.77] and preoperative AHI [p = 0.45] were similar between groups. Body mass index was significantly higher in the SC group [p = 0.02]. Total facility time, time in surgical room, anesthesia care time, and postoperative recovery time were significantly decreased in the ES group [p < 0.0001]. Procedure time [p = 0.003] and room turnover time [p = 0.0062] were also significantly decreased in the ES versus SC group. No complications occurred in either group, however, average minimum oxygen saturation was significantly decreased in the SC group [p = 0.04].

Conclusions: The efficiency and safety of DISE can be optimized by relocating the procedures from the outpatient surgery center to the endoscopy suite.
