(1110) Examining the Experiences and Outcomes of Otolaryngology Reapplicants

Introduction: Otolaryngology, a fiercely competitive field, sees more applicants than available training spots This results in well-qualified individuals contemplating the challenging decision of reapplying. Prospective candidates and their advisors encounter a dearth of available data to guide them in making informed decisions regarding the most advantageous employment options during their gap year.

Methods: A voluntary survey on otomatch.com, aimed at medical students interested in otolaryngology, occurred from March 2022 to May 2023. The study aims to document outcomes for reapplicants and identify those remaining unmatched but planning to reapply.

Results: A total of 203 survey responses were collected, 22 were reapplicants (all from allopathic schools). Out of these 22, 20 ultimately matched into otolaryngology. Of the remaining reapplicants, 1 matched into their back up specialty on the second match, and 1 respondent did not provide the final match result. On average, reapplicants applied to 95 +/- 22 programs and received 9.1 +/- 4 interviews. Interestingly, they obtained, on average, 2.05 +/- 5.3 fewer interviews (p = 0.122) than in their initial cycle, despite augmenting their number of publications by 3.09 +/- 1.9. During their gap year, 18 out of 22 reapplicants (85%) pursued research fellowship positions, while 3 entered preliminary general surgery programs through SOAP.

Conclusions: Prospective otolaryngology reapplicants encounter various choices for their gap year; however, current literature lacks detailed information on success rates for each option. While acknowledging the challenges ahead, it's crucial for reapplicants to be informed about the successes of their predecessors to inspire and support the highly motivated individuals pursuing a position in otolaryngology.
