(0509) Clinical Features, Evaluation, and Management of Speech and Swallow Complications of Facial Paralysis: A Review

Introduction: Facial paralysis is a multifaceted condition that may affect an individual in numerous ways. One area that has been shown to be impacted by facial paralysis is the orofacial region, including complications such as dysarthria, buildup of bolus in the cheek, dysphagia, and sialorrhea. While these complications can have life-altering consequences for patients, they have not been emphasized in the literature.

Methods: A literature search was conducted to investigate the effects of facial paralysis on speech and oral competence, as well as current evaluation and treatment methods. Studies were assessed based on set inclusion criteria relevant to the goals of the review.

Results: In total, 64 studies were included in the review after assessment. Themes include difficulties with speech, particularly bilabial consonants, difficulties with eating and drinking, reduced intelligibility, and the importance of speech-language pathologists on the care team. Treatment options included physiotherapy and surgical intervention, among others.

Conclusions: This scoping review analyzes the current literature on the effects that facial paralysis has on speech and oral competence and discusses treatment options and implications for the future to address these issues. More research is needed in this area.
