Artificial Intelligence for the Otolaryngologist: Everything You Need to Know and Worry About

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) is a crucial topic for us to explore as a field, as it has the potential to revolutionize efficiency, improve workflow, reduce burnout, improve diagnostic accuracy, and enhancing patient care.

This expert lecture, led by two board-certified Otolaryngologists at an academic teaching hospital, will explore the opportunities currently provided by AI within our medicine and specifically surgery with an emphasis in Otolaryngology. Our oral presentation involving AI at the 2023 Annual Meeting was a late breaking abstract and one of the first in our specialty in this area; it was well received by the attendees, leading to many questions as it relates to how this technology works and how it can be used in everyday practice. Since then, both authors have presented and published several papers involving their experience with commercially available chat generative technology in the efforts to educate our colleagues in Otolaryngology and make them aware of the best use cases.

Using our own experiences with AI tools at our workplace in addition to current literature, this lecture will explain the use cases for AI from an education standpoint, from a patient-facing perspective, and most importantly, from a clinical workflow perspective. This will be an engaging lecture, and we will utilize AI tools during our presentation such that the participants will understand how easy it is to begin working with AI at their own workplace.

Whether the attendee is familiar with AI or is looking to improve their knowledge to kickstart their AI journey, we anticipate that this expert lecture will serve as an important baseline into one’s foray into the field. We must ensure our colleagues are educated and aware of AI, at the least, and at the best our Academy must ensure our members are able to utilize AI functionality in patient care as they deem safe and appropriate.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the terms AI, LLM, and chat generative technology.
  2. Compare current AI tools that are available in the market, and how each tool serves a purpose as it relates to education based, patient-facing, and clinical-workflow facets of ones everyday practice.
  3. Recognize the importance and limitations of AI as it relates to its use within the field of surgery and Otolarygology and the future potentials of this field which is changing rapidly.
