PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Atypical migraine is a common issue in patients presenting to otolaryngologists. In the past, migraine was considered to be a headache-only problem. However, current understanding is that migraine causes many symptoms in the head and neck. In this presentation, we will review the otologic manifestations of migraine. We will discuss vestibular symptoms, cochlear symptoms (tinnitus, hearing loss, hyperacusis), and sensory symptoms (aural pressure, pain, middle ear myoclonus). We will discuss the nuances in the diagnosis of these various conditions and the treatment algorithm when approaching therapeutic options. Treatment of vestibular, cochlear, and sensory issues with emphasis on medical therapy, lifestyle, and dietary changes will be discussed in detail. This lecture aims to provide information relevant to the comprehensive and subspecialty otolaryngologist, advanced practice provider, and otolaryngologist in-training, on the best methods of recognizing atypical migraine patients and treating them properly.
