PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Allergic rhinitis [AR] is one of the most common disorders seen by otolaryngologists, frequently presenting with other significant head and neck disorders as a co-morbid condition. While some ENT practices also include an allergy practice, many do not; in addition, if a patient has tried and failed over-the-counter allergy medications and the practice does not offer allergy injections, many otolaryngologists are uncertain what more to offer patients.

An expert panel of presenters reviews and debates the many different options available for the medical and surgical/procedural treatment of allergic rhinitis, including discussing which options an ENT practice can offer even if an allergy practice is not part of practice set-up. Medical treatment modalities include, but are not limited, new prescription medications for AR and how to prescribe them, new pet food, sublingual immunotherapy tablets, aqueous and subcutaneous immunotherapy, oral and mucosal immunotherapy. Procedural treatment modalities include, but are not limited, in-office or in-operating room surgical reduction/resection of the turbinates, cryotherapy options, radiofrequency/low heat thermal cautery options, and posterior nasal nerve targeted therapies, among others. Panelists will discuss and debate the inclusion of other surgical treatments such as septal swell bodies, nasal valve collapse, and non-allergic rhinitis treatments, and if allergy medical treatment is necessary prior to surgical intervention.

The discussion and debate involved in the panel can include the merits of alternative medical practices, such as acupuncture of allergy and use of local honey, as well as, future potential options, such as intra-lymphatic immunotherapy and monoclonal antibody trials.
Questions from the audience are highly encouraged during this session.

Learning Objectives:

Discuss and describe the different currently available surgical and procedural treatment options for allergic rhinitis and their advantages/disadvantages.
Discuss and debate the evidence to support the use of these different procedural therapies [or the lack thereof].
Discuss, describe, and debate whether a patient would need to try and fail allergy medical therapy or immunotherapy first before proceeding to these treatments.
