PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The panel will focus on the current role of parotidectomy for chronic sialadenitis. Chronic parotitis is a common disorder of multiple etiologies including stones, scar tissue, radiation trauma, immune disorders, and chronic infection. Comprehensive evaluation with appropriate physical examination, imaging, and serology will be reviewed. Optimal management is controversial due to multiple treatment options with various limitations and diverse expected outcomes. The panel will consist of a Pro and Con debate on whether parotidectomy is indicated for chronic sialadenitis. The Con debate will highlight less invasive options including medical management, salivary endoscopy, and botox application with expected outcomes, and potential complications of parotidectomy for chronic sialadenitis. The Pro debate will highlight factors associated with failure of less invasive interventions, as well as surgical planning, use of facial nerve monitoring, extent of parotidectomy required, reconstructive considerations, mitigation of complications, and expected outcomes. The presentation will conclude with cases examples with audience and panel response, and provide a summary of best practices based on the currently available evidence.

Compare the advantages and disadvantages of gland-preserving and ablative approaches for chronic parotitis.
Recognize the indications for parotidectomy for chronic parotitis while mitigating risk of complications.
