Negotiating Your Worth in Academic: Practical Knowledge of the Business of Medicine

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Residency in academic medicine teaches a great many tools in the practice of medicine and how to provide the best surgical and medical care of patients. However, it is does not teach the basics of business of medicine including understanding of pay structures, RVUs, P/Ls, and how to build a successful academic career in otolaryngology. This program will discuss the different pay structures models (P/L, RVUs, salary) as well the advantages and disadvantages for each. Basic job negotiations, opportunities and pitfalls will be discussed as well. Lastly, practical advice on insurances (medmal), retirement will also be discussed. No specific products will be discussed just concepts. The program is designed for younger members of the academy but will have practical advice for all members.

Understand different pay structures that may be presented in a job offer and advantages and disadvantages for each.
Understand fine points and negotiation opportunities that are available during a job search.
Understand the need for planned insurance and retirement within the context of career and job building.
