Hands-On Septoplasty Simulation Using Lamb Septum Model

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Septoplasty is one of the most common rhinologic procedures yet it is challenging to teach due to limited access and visualization. Because of these challenges, supervised training with limited risk to patients is difficult and there is need for a simulation model.

Lamb septum has properties similar to human septum and can be used as a training model for septoplasty. Human cadaver and 3-D printed models are options, but mounted lamb septum is inexpensive, easy to procure and proven to have similar biological and mechanical properties to human septum. When mounted appropriately, the lamb septum model can provide valuable practice for septoplasty without patient risk or the large costs of education time in the operating room.

The goal of this simulation is to use the lamb septum model to teach critical steps of submucosal resection of the septum. These steps include visualization, mucosal incision and flap elevation, cartilaginous incisions, removal, and closure.

The exercise will provide student doctors and junior residents with initial exposure to, and increased confidence in septoplasty surgical techniques. The lamb septum model will be provided to each learner and live dissection techniques will be discussed and demonstrated. Each group of learners will receive instruction personalized to their skill set to enhance knowledge and confidence.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize anatomic components and tissue characteristics of the septum relevant to septoplasty.
  2. Describe skills and steps required to perform septoplasty.
  3. Demonstrate septoplasty surgical skills using a realistic model.
