Management of Radiation Effects on the Ear and Temporal Bone

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This course will discuss the effects of therapeutic radiation on the temporal bone. Radiotherapy is commonly used to treat head and neck cancer. These radiation fields can involve the external ear, ear canal and temporal bone and have the potential to produce hearing loss, chronic otitis media, radiation associated tumors, and osteoradionecrosis. This course will discuss the management of the complications of radiotherapy to the ear canal and temporal bone. Special consideration will be given to the topics of tympanomastoidectomy, mastoid obliteration, osteointegrated implants for hearing and auricular reconstruction, cochlear implants, and carotid artery rupture.
