Longitudinal Impact of Otolaryngology Mentorship Program for Medical Students

Introduction: Early exposure to otolaryngology is important to foster opportunities for exploration, to prepare for future clinical rotations, and to enhance residency applications in a competitive field. The goal of the ENT Mentorship Program (ENTMP) is to offer early engagement in scholarly activities and lasting mentorship for rising second-year medical students within the field. The objective of this study was to evaluate the program effectiveness in preparing medical students for clinical years and residency applications while fostering mentorship.

Methods: Survey data from 2015-2023 was analyzed at standardized increments after program participation. Students were administered surveys immediately after the program completion and during their fourth year of medical school. The initial survey assessed basic clinical skills, exposure to the field, and research involvement while the fourth-year survey evaluated the value of the program in navigating the residency application process. Qualitative and quantitative data was aggregated from these survey responses.

Results: In total, 85 students, 48.2% of whom were women, participated in the program between 2015 and 2023. Surgical residencies were pursued by 49.3% of graduating program participants, with 29.9% selecting otolaryngology. The ENTMP led to departmental research involvement for 42.9% of participants. All participants found the ENTMP to be a valuable experience and 95.2% rated their familiarity with the faculty in the department to be satisfactory or better. In the fourth-year survey, 75% of graduating medical students felt the ENTMP prepared them for residency.

Conclusions: The ENTMP provides longitudinal benefits for medical students including early clinical experience, research opportunities, departmental relationships, and residency preparedness. In an increasingly competitive specialty with an emphasis on holistic residency applications, departmental mentorship and outreach are critical for medical student success.
