PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This activity will bring together military and civilian facial plastic surgeons to discuss their experiences evaluating and managing major facial trauma. They will present cases in a panel format and comment on approaches to adult and pediatric pan facial fractures, ballistic injuries, and soft tissue trauma as well as differences in resources and treatment options between fixed facilities within the United States and facilities in austere environments, such as combat support hospitals or medical missions. Risk factors for adverse outcomes will be discussed as well as tips for optimizing outcomes, including the role of imaging for ensuring adequate bony reduction. The panel will constitute the centerpiece of the Society of Military Otolaryngologists Annual Meeting and welcomes all attendees, military and civilian.

Learning Objectives:

Recognize features of injuries that raise the risk of complications, such as infection, hardware extrusion, mucocele, and persistent diplopia, especially those that are likely to arise when providing head and neck surgical care in austere environments.
Explain strategies for reestablishing the height, width, and projection of the facial framework when disrupted by pan facial fractures as well as techniques for optimizing soft tissue repair, particularly in the event of substantial soft tissue loss.
Describe the role of intra- and post-operative imaging in maintaining outcome quality control for open reduction and internal fixation of facial fractures.
