PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Drooling is common among children with neuromuscular conditions and can be described as anterior drooling or posterior drooling when patients aspirate their saliva; this can lead to significant respiratory comorbidities if left untreated. Salivary duct pathology including juvenile recurrent parotitis and sialoliths have no universally accepted treatment guidelines in children, but sialendoscopy has emerged as a promising treatment option. Patients with rheumatologic conditions can present with recurrent/chronic sialadenitis, but the diagnostic yield of the battery of rheumatologic and immunologic testing is varied.
The panel presentation will offer case-based education highlighting cases in 1) Drooling and aspiration of saliva 2) salivary duct pathology and 3) rheumatologic/immunologic diseases that present with salivary gland pathology. Cases will allow for the discussion of the latest evidence and pearls from 3 Pediatric Otolaryngologists whose practices focus on the management of benign salivary gland pathology in children. Panelists will discuss the wide array of saliva reducing procedures and surgeries for drooling and aspiration of saliva and the associated controversies. Juvenile recurrent parotitis, sialolithiasis and the use of sialoendoscopy in children will be described, and a diagnostic framework for patients with suspected inflammatory conditions affecting the saliva glands will be highlighted.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the surgical management of pediatric patients who drool and/or aspirate saliva.
  2. Discuss treatment strategies for pediatric salivary duct disorders and the application of sialendoscopy in children.
  3. Recognize the signs, symptoms and work up for systemic conditions which present as salivary gland pathology.
