Debating Cost-Effective Care in Head and Neck Surgery

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: There is ongoing concern regarding the fiscal sustainability of health care systems with an increasing need to better understand heath care economics. Efforts to limit health care spending and provide efficient use of health care dollars remains paramount. This year the panel will incorporate audience feedback from 2023. We will be conducting the panel in a more traditional debate format. Leaders in our field will face off while they tackle the pros and cons of controversial fiscal topics in head and neck cancer care and reconstruction. Audience participation and input is strongly encouraged. Topics proposed include: does longer inpatient admission reduce 30-day readmission and improve outcomes through more timely identification of complications? does venture capitalism involvement in medical practices improve access? is a telehealth consultation prior to a free flap adequate to allow for building patient-surgeon rapport and counseling? do all salvage surgeries really need a free flap? what are the real obstacles to dental implants (why don't all patients have access)?

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion of this activity, the participants should have a greater understanding of the controversial topics in head and neck surgery.
  2. Upon completion of this activity, the participants should have a greater understanding of the data in support of certain practice patterns.
  3. Upon completion of this activity, the participants should have gained insight into potential avenues for improving cost effectiveness.
