PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: International reports have indicated increasing rates of button battery ingestions. In the United States approximately 3500 button batteries are ingested per year, 62.5% of which occur in children under 6 years old. Nearly 13% of these children will develop a major complication such as a esophageal perforation or stricture, tracheoesophageal fistula, major vessel injury, vocal cord paralysis or spondylodiscitis. Although an improved understanding of the mechanism of injury in button batteries has led to novel, potentially life-saving mitigation strategies, all are predicated on knowing that a button battery has been ingested. Despite increased awareness of the dangerous of button batteries, most ingestions are unwitnessed and complications still occur. Rapid identification and removal remains the single most important management goal. In this program, an international panel of experts will present their experience with button batteries. Using a series of cases and videos, our panelists will describe complications of button batteries and their management. We will discuss the utilization of novel mitigation strategies and present a management pathway that integrates cutting edge treatment strategies to reduce time to removal. It is our hope that his panel will help otolaryngologists improve their management of esophageal button battery impactions, complications and lead to effective change in their hospitals.

To implement treatment pathways for rapid transfer and removal of esophageal button batteries and integrate state of the art care into existing pathways.
