PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Botulinum toxin plays a prominent role in the management of both pediatric and adult salivary gland pathology. Goals of treatment are to quiet the salivary gland and limit flow of saliva, making botulinum toxin effective in treating various pathologies including sialadenitis without sialolithiasis, salivary gland trauma, post-operative complications, and pathologic sialorrhea in adults and children. Literature varies with regard to timing of botulinum toxin injections, method of injection or administration, and the dosing of botulinum toxin. The incorporation of botulinum toxin into the treatment of salivary gland disorders will be the focus of this session.

This panel of experts will describe indications for using botulinum toxin in the salivary glands, administration techniques, and outcomes following botulinum toxin use in both pediatric and adult salivary gland pathologies. The challenge of insurance coverage and approval will also be discussed. This presentation will utilize a case-based approach to address why botulinum toxin is so much more than an injectable for pretty faces and how familiarity with botulinum toxin will enhance your salivary gland practice.

  3. Provide understanding of the outcomes following botulinum toxin use for treatment of various salivary gland pathologies.
