PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Session

Description:
This panel highlights the unique strengths of physicians as entrepreneurs, pathways to successfully starting a small business, key resources to leverage, and how to troubleshoot commonly encountered issues. Many physicians who are successful in this space find their work in the business space as a stimulating way to augment their medical careers and develop ways to help patients and the medical community in ways beyond simply rendering patient care. Three panelists will discuss their experiences serving as the Scientific Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of a biomedical startup company, Medical Director of a company producing games for medical education, and a finalist in the NIH/NIA Healthy Aging Startup Challenge for Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) funding. They will discuss the key considerations, opportunities, and challenges physicians need to recognize as they embark on starting their own businesses outside of traditional clinical pathways while continuing to practice medicine. This session will allow for audience interaction and appeal to general otolaryngologists, academicians, and trainees. This one-hour panel presentation will cover the topics above using a combination of didactics, audience response queries, and case-based examples.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the strengths physicians bring to the healthcare startup space.
  2. Consider key elements of successful startups such as securing funding, training programs and other resources, and best practices for logistic considerations, such as completing the paperwork to register a company or formalize your role within one.
  3. Challenges of considering work outside of health care including legal and ethical implications of working with start- up companies, including your own.
